Women Interesed in Construction: FREE Training

WorkReady Houston is a comprehensive Workforce Training Program that provides employment readiness and occupational training to individuals interested in expanding existing skills or acquiring new construction-related skills and knowledge.  The initiative supports the needs of METRO, Houston Rapid Transit (HRT), and its subcontractors. 

 
David Jenkins is the Workforce Training Manager and he has indicated that they are interested in recruiting women for their training classes.  Attached is a sheet listing the qualifications needed to apply for this training.  Also attached is an information sheet on the program with Mr. Jenkins contact information.  There is no charge for this training.
The types of classes vary depending on employers needs.  Here is some information on the types of training they have provided and the positions available reflect what they are currently training that class in:
  • General Labor - The core curriculum covers basic safety, introduction to construction math, introduction to hand tools, introduction to power tools, and introduction to blueprints.
  • Concrete Technician - Topics covered include measuring and layout tools, tools for surface treatment, mixing and conveying equipment, and concrete finishing.
  • Pipe Layer- Topics covered include how to lay underground communications and electrical ducts.  Installation of pipes for storm drainage, Installation of valves and other accessories.
  • OSHA 10 - Provided in addition to General Labor, Pipe Layer or Concrete Technician NCCER certification, it is designed to give entry level construction workers a basic understanding of how to recognize and prevent hazards on a construction site. The course covers a wide range of possible hazards a worker may encounter.
  • Flagging Certification - Also provided in addition to General Labor, Pipe Layer or Concrete Technician NCCER certification, it will provide graduate with basic skills to maximize safety for public traffic and construction workers working in traffic areas.
