Each year Voices Breaking Boundaries (VBB) hosts an annual East End Live Art production Teachers and Students Speak Out 3 to give voice to overworked, dedicated teachers and students, who participate in VBB’s Writing for Self Discovery Workshop. The workshop provides teachers, who teach at-risk students, a space to nurture their creative voices and gain support. Students are also given the chance to express themselves freely through the spoken and written word. This year’s artists/educators include: Keisha Breaker, Sharon Fabriz, Michael Glazner, Lara Heiberg, Shenaz Keshwari. Students will also be performing. The time to listen to writings by Houston-based educators and students has never been more urgent! Check our site for more details!

Other News ::

VBB's 2011 Valiente Award took place on March 5, and VBB honored international writer Bapsi Sidhwa at an event chaired by Peter Durkin and VBB Board Member Rufi Natarajan. More than 150 VBB and Bapsi Sidhwa supporters attended the evening. Tyagaraja and Gunjen Mittal (a VBB programming member) performed music and dance, Brazos Bookstore sold copies of Bapsi’s novels, Faroukh Virani screened a rough cut of his new documentary on VBB, jewelry and clothing were available for purchase and there was a rug raffle. The highlight of the evening was an intimate reading by Bapsi Sidhwa. To read more about the evening, go to a story by James Ridgeway.

VBB's Open Journal shows have been a regular occurence on KPFT Pacifica Radio 90.1 FM for many years. Starting this summer, VBB’s program, newly entitled Think Global, Act Local, will be on every second Tuesday of each month. The next show is Tuesday, April 12 at 9:30 am when we will be discussing our upcoming show Teachers and Students Speak Out 3 along with the challenging educational issues that have arisen because of impending budget cuts.

VBB’s Founding / Artistic Director Sehba Sarwar was recently at Bronx Community College as part of a panel on women’s rights. A large group of students and faculty attended the talk and there was much interest among the BCC community to recreate VBB’s living room art shows on that campus.
